Young orphan Pip's life is changed forever when he is surprised by an escaped convict.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, first published in 1861, is one of his most famous and beloved novels. It is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of social class, ambition, love, and personal growth, set against the backdrop of 19th-century England.
The novel follows the life of Pip (Philip Pirrip), an orphaned boy raised by his sister and her blacksmith husband, Joe Gargery. Pip's life takes a dramatic turn when he is invited to the mansion of Miss Havisham, a wealthy but eccentric woman who lives in perpetual mourning after being jilted at the altar. There, Pip meets Estella, Miss Havisham’s beautiful but cold-hearted ward, and quickly falls in love with her, though she treats him with disdain.
Pip longs to rise above his humble origins as a blacksmith’s apprentice, hoping to become a gentleman and win Estella’s heart. His wish appears to come true when a mysterious benefactor provides him with a large fortune, enabling him to move to London and live as a gentleman. Pip assumes the benefactor is Miss Havisham, who wants him to marry Estella, but he later learns that his true benefactor is Abel Magwitch, a convict he once helped as a child. This revelation shocks Pip and forces him to confront his own values and ambitions.
