The Aeneid is an epic poem written by the Roman poet Virgil between 29 and 19 BCE. It is one of the great classics of Western literature and serves as Rome’s national epic, much like Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey for ancient Greece. The poem tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan hero, who, after the fall of Troy, embarks on a long and perilous journey to found a new homeland in Italy. His journey leads to the eventual establishment of what will become Rome, linking the city’s origins to the heroism and struggles of the ancient world.Throughout The Aeneid, Virgil explores themes of duty (or pietas), fate, and sacrifice. Aeneas is portrayed as a model Roman hero, prioritizing his responsibilities to the gods, his family, and his future people over his personal desires. His journey is not just physical but also spiritual, as he accepts his role in founding the Roman Empire, a destiny that involves great personal cost, including leaving behind Dido and losing many comrades in war.
